Subject:Chinese bird & flower painting - tranlation & period??
Posted By: Tim Fri, Oct 15, 2010 IP: 76.108.113.176

Hello.

Here's the photos...

I picked this beautiful little (image size 10" x 17") painting up at a thrift store for $26. I removed it from the frame to photograph...looked to me that it was framed in the very early 20th c., but painting looks older.

Any idea of age, artist, and/or tranlation on the writing?

Thanks.

there's a qing painter by this name (Chen Huan) listed as being good at landscape and orchids, but i have no evidence that it's the same painter who painted yours. Date corresponds to 1986, 1926, 1866, 1806 etc. painting ok, calligraphy not so hot.

Thank you.

Yes, I was able to identify the Bing Yin as the first two characters in the second set of characters.

The frame this painting came in seems to be of the Republic period, so 1926 seems correct. But, the painting looks older, no? Is there a way to tell?

Also, I've only been able to identify a few characters from the poem....the first line seems to be about the calling of birds. Can you help with a more complete translation?

Kind regards,
Tim

not today I am afraid. the characters are all pretty clearly legible though, you should be able to find them all with a dictionary. unfortunatley i don't know enough poetry to know whether this is a well known poem or something composed for this work.
