Subject:Fan painting with bird/flowers - Chinese or Japanese?
Posted By: Tim Fri, Oct 29, 2010 IP: 76.108.113.176

Grreetings.

Is this a Japanese or Chinese fan? Can anyone help with the artist/period made?

Here's the link to my photos...

Usually I can tell just by the subject matter as Japanese paintings during the Meiji era tend to be more naturalistic.

However, I have found some Chinese fans by REN YI (1840-1896) sold by Sothebys that look similar in style, but the images are not large enough to see the detail really matches or not.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

thought I sent this in already but don't see it showing up: Chinese, 19th or first half 20th century by a Jiang Lin, painted "in Song style". Quail were subject matter during the Southern Song period in particular, examples can be seen in the National Palace Museum Taiwan and in Japanese collections.

Thank you. With your help, I was able to find another example of a fan painting by this artist that sold for 18,000 hkd, which is about $2,300.

By the way, I bought another painting that I think is 18th c.....please see my new post. I appreciate your comments very much.

Tim
