Subject:Japanese Gold Tone Picture
Posted By: Bert Tue, Nov 02, 2010 IP: 70.181.109.9

Hello, I have two old framed photographs which are gold and black in color. I was hoping someone might know if these are Gold Tone Photographs? Any input or ideas are welcomed. Many Thanks Bert

Your photograph was made on a gold colored paper
that was coated with light sensitive silver, the
same as any black and white photograph. Several
specialty papers were available for this type of
image. A gold toned photograph would have a very
cool tone to it. Gold chloride would be diluted
and then the finished photograph would be put
into the solution. The gold would bond to the
silver making it even more impervious to fading.
Gold toning was most often used on winter and
water scenes as the resulting tone was a cool blue, with the whites unaffected.
