Subject:Is this an 18th c. Chinese painting???
Posted By: Tim Sat, Nov 06, 2010 IP: 98.254.38.62

Just bought this small, but very nice Chinese painting of mountains. Looks 18th c., but I would like help with tranlation / artist / period, please.

Frame has gallery seal of 'The A.B. Closson Jr. Co.', a very famous Chicago gallery that opened in 1866. According to history of the gallery (http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2003/01/05/biz_closson05timeline.html), Mr. Closson traveled to Europe buying antiques from 1907-1929.

This painting was probably acquired during one these 'antique' collecting trips.

Painted area measures 12" (32cm) x 10.75" (28cm)

Here's the link to the photos...

I appreciate any help offered.

not an easy one. inscription does not include artist's name or a date, presumably this was one of a number of leaves of an album painted by a professional shop. offhand I don't recognize the source of the inscription, perhaps someone with more knowledge of Chinese poetry or literature will.
