Subject:China, Japan or elsewhere?
Posted By: Martina Wed, Nov 17, 2010 IP: 86.157.142.187

Hi! Has anyone seen something similar? I am trying to get some info on this. All I know is that my great-grandfather who was sailor brought this back with him in around 1900 from China. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello again! I am so sorry to bother you yet again! I have enclosed photos of other vases that came together with the small one. Can anyone let me know what marks at the bottom of big one are saying or any other info? Is there any value - appart from sentimental, of course. I am looking forward to your replies and very big thank you again. Martina

Looks Japanese and would expect it to be 20th century,a lot later than 1900 but the style is different to what I've seen so....?

Hi Martina,

Your vase is probably Japanese. It has a Satsuma like decoration with raised enamels (moriage). It was done a lot on Kutani porcelain during the first half of the 20th. century. A bit hard to believe this dates from around 1900. My guess would be later.

Regards,

Arjan

Hi to all,
The vase in the question is definitely a Nagoya Satsuma style Export porcelain. Around 1920-1940, pre World War II. Most of these porcelain were made in Mino or Seto as a blank, decorated in Nagoya where many painters were trained in Kutani.
Best Regards,
Emiko

Hi there! Thank you for your replies. My great-grandafther was a sailor and last time he sailed was around 1915. Can anyone see what are the marks at the bottom saying? Thanks again.

Hi Martina,
Most of early Japanese export pottery & porcelain were produced in the various places after the Meiji restoration near the port. And the workers were a melting pot of the different backgrounds & origins. When you try to name a name of the maker ,it becomes almost impossible. I talked about this in this forum before, but there was a big stir & struggle among the potters & the painters who had a job under the feudal lords, also in the Meiji period, they were allowed to move out of their original birth place . This was a big deal.
In any case, most of these run-of-the-mill kind of the product should be valued as decorative value which can be higher or lower depending on the current demand.
The vases in the picture were made early 20th century. The marking reads Dai Nippon Imayama or Konzan- zo ( made by Konzan).
Since your granfather was a sailer, he probably stopped at a Japanese gift shop near the sea port and purchased these vases.
Thank yor for sharing,
Emiko
