Subject:Qing Dynasty Vase...Qianlong Period?
Posted By: Shelley Sun, Dec 05, 2010 IP: 24.166.17.156

Hello,

This vase was a gift over 10 yrs. ago. from a friend. He bought it at an antique store. Recently, I've been learning more about Chinese symbolism and after noting the imperial dragons on the piece and otherwise, I'm intrigued to know the authenticity, age and potential value of it.

Also, there is a worn sticker on the inside with gold foil lettering that says "something I can't make out, that is 3 letters", followed by Huang. I can also make out the word Beijing on it. The sticker appears to have what may be dragons and/or phoenixes in gold on each side of some Chinese writing on it as well. (The picture I took of it didn't turned out a bit blurry. So, I didn't include one, for now.)

The mark on the bottom appears to be the Qianlong yoyong seal. If anyone can confirm any of the above or offer more information, in general, I would greatly appreciate your time. Thank you.

Shelley

Thank you very much, Patrick. Now that I've looked back at my notes, I had written down the name of that mark as well. However, I've done so much web browsing on the subject lately, that it is all starting to turn into jumbled chaos in my mind.

Any idea of the potential value of the piece? Amongst all the web browsing, I haven't seen another vase just like it.

Also, is Kung synonymous with "Huang"...I believe it says, "Dun" before Huang on the inside sticker?

Thank you for your time.

There's no phonetic correlation between Kung and Huang.

The name Huang is a Mandarin pinyin transcription that would be spelled 'Wong' to indicate its Cantonese pronunciation. Kung is a Taiwan Wade-Giles system transcription that is written 'Gong' in pinyin and 'Gung' for its Cantonese form.

I'm happy to hear that everyone is now perfectly clear on this question.

Thank you for the clarification, Bill. And please forgive my ignorance on the matter. ;-)

Patrick, after looking at the mark you posted, I noticed that it is very blurry in nature; the characters sort of run together, by comparison to the concise nature of the mark on my vase. I don't know if that makes any difference on the estimate of age? Just thought it might be worth pointing out.

Without having the vase in my hands it is hard to tell. Chinese famille porcelain vases have good value even brand new. This pair in my photo are marked Jingdezhen with the same basic style at 12 inches high. These are newer vases marked Zhong Guo Jingdezhen Zhi quinlong mark, but are from (1970's) and retail value is about $300.00 for the pair.

Thank you for the input, Patrick. Do you think it's worth having the vase looked at by someone who would know for sure? (I'm completely new at how one goes about these things.)

Also, those vases are beautiful!

It's too bad that spam is a problem on here...because it would be great if the posting in this forum was in real time. :-)

I forgot to add that the vase is 23 and 1/4 inches high. If that makes much difference?

The size makes a differance to a buyer and the use of the item. I also have large floor vases and it just depends on buyers needs. This one is 23 inches and marked qianlong Jingdezhen; made in 1970's I just prefer the art from Jingdezhen. Value about $130.00
