Subject:Japanese Geisha Woodblock prints
Posted By: Polly Feeney Sun, Dec 05, 2010 IP: 98.114.83.242

I have had these 2 Japanese woodblock prints since 1985, when they were given to me by a lady who aquired them while living in Japan (1946-1948) working for the Army Corps of Engineers as a secretary/interpreter.

Over the years I have spent countless hours poring over websites that deal with Japanese woodblock prints in the attempt to determine the ID's of the artists. To no avail...

They are going to be professionally reframed next week, and I would be so grateful for any insight/info pertaining to the original artists.

Thank you in advance for ANY info you may be able to provide.

Polly

One of them is a print published by Watanabe Shozaburo in 1932, designed by Kasamatsu Shiro, titled "Early Spring Tea Ceremony". For reference, see http://www.hanga.com/viewimage.cfm?ID=2580

The other one looks familiar, but I can't place it.

URL Title :Early Spring Tea Ceremony

Based on a quick Google search, the other one with standing female figure appears to be 'Geisha in Summer' by Sadanobu Hasegawa (1809-1879).
Best regards,
Bill H.

The first print is "Maiko in the summer" by Hasegawa Sadanobu III (1881-1863), originally published by Uchida ca 1950, but the Uchida copyright seal in the right hand margin seems to be missing on Polly's print. Could be a later reissue or pirated (?) copy.

Thank you SO much Marc! I am so excited to finally know the artist of this print (my favorite of the two).

It was very kind of you to take the time to share your knowledge. Please know how very much I appreciate that.

With warm regards,

Polly

P.S. If you ever need mark/ID help on American pottery (my forte) please do not hesitate to ask me. I would love to return the favor.
