Subject:Is jap. bronze budda....actually chinese?
Posted By: Matt Lucas Wed, Dec 15, 2010 IP: 98.114.83.242

I had always thought that my little 2 3/4" bronze (or some other non-magnetic metal) buddha was Japanese in origin. One of our Thanksgiving guests admired it and, after looking at the characters on the base, announced that it was chinese! Of course he couldn't read/translate the characters, but he was certain they are chinese.

I have thought it was Japanese for 30 years!

Can anyone confirm this?

Matt

your guest is wrong, the writing is Japanese and reads right to left: top line: "national treasure", bottom line: "Kamakura no daibutsu" (The Great Buddha of Kamakura). look online for photos of the large outdoor buddha statue in Kamakura

WOOOHOOO (pumping fist)!!! Thank you for this oh-so-sweet vindication Rat!

Nothing pleases me more than taking this notorious "knowitall" down a peg or two.

These are tourist pieces they sell in souvenir shops in Kamakura. I have a similar one I bought there.
