Subject:GENUINE QIANLONG MARK OR NOT
Posted By: Andrew Wed, Dec 22, 2010 IP: 124.179.251.74

Hello to all,
I have been reading these forum comments with great interest.
I am a novice collector who came across a monochrome green vase by chance.
It is marked to the base in black ink with a Qianlong six character reign mark in normal script of three columns with two characters in each,
the marks are not in double circles....would anyone guess a date, the vase has all the characteristics of Qianlong fish-roe crackle green.
with thanks, Andrew
PS: my camera takes 108 kb images as the smallest, but I cannot upload to this site as they're bigger than the 100kb allowed!

A mark drawn in black ink may be accurate representation of characters in Qianlong reign mark, but it would not signify made during Qianlong reign for Emperor or his household / court.

Good luck,
Cal

Thanks Cal,
does that mean it is a retrospective mark & would be on a later made piece, if it is not of the Qianlong period?
If this is so, how could I determine the likely age?
thanks again, Andrew.

Likely age is 20th century. There is no quick and easy way to say in words what part of 20th century, or whether made in China or in Japan.

The most esteemed green glaze is called 'apple green' in the West. A crackled green, probably not so much. Could suggest made quite recently.

Post natural-light photos including in-focus closeup of inscription, good photo of base overall and someone may be able to help with dating.

But would not really matter what decade of 20th century made for purpose of valuation.

Good luck,
Cal

Hi Cal, have been able to supply theses images of the vase.
Jim was able to resize them for me...the vase is also under the posting...GOOD CHINESE PORCELAIN...vase looks quite old, especially the interior, not really that modern, could you estimate a more precise date of production?
The mark on the vase is very well written by hand;I thought black would stand out much better under a green glaze than a blue or red inked mark! but this is only my personal observation as to why black may have been the preferred choice.
cheers,Andrew.

You not show mark.

Can not tell from your photos what part of vase shown in 3rd photo.

Look to me like florist vase made last 20 years, inspired by but not reproducing Qing dynasty 'phoenix tail' vase shape. Mark have nothing to do with when made.

Would be nice for iris or peonies.

Good luck,
Cal
