Subject:Japanese prints
Posted By: Tracy McClain Wed, Feb 02, 2011 IP: 99.182.253.36

I have several prints that I am interested in selling, but would first like for some possible appraisals of them.

Thanks

Tracy

Tracy,

I looked at a some of the prints. One was the Hiroshige I print of the Totsuka station of the "53 Stations of the Tokaido" (see link below). Yours does not look like an original and it has been significantly trimmed into the image. Thus, it has little more than decorative value (say $50ish).

I'm pretty sure the same can be said about the one before it (Shirasuka station from the same series)
(http://www.hiroshige.org.uk/hiroshige/tokaido_hoeido/images/33_Shirasuka.jpg), Kanaya station
(http://www.hiroshige.org.uk/hiroshige/tokaido_hoeido/images/25_Kanaya.jpg), Yoshida station
(http://www.hiroshige.org.uk/hiroshige/tokaido_hoeido/images/35_Yoshida.jpg), Oiso station
(http://www.hiroshige.org.uk/hiroshige/tokaido_hoeido/images/09_Oiso.jpg), and Marika station
(http://www.hiroshige.org.uk/hiroshige/tokaido_hoeido/images/21_Mariko.jpg).

This is considered by many to be Hiroshige's best Tokaido series and it has been copied many times. Likely, all your prints are from the same set of reprints.

The same can also be said for the "Evening Shower at Atake and the Great Bridge" from Hiroshige's "100 Views of Edo" (http://www.hiroshige.org.uk/hiroshige/100_views_edo/100_views_edo.htm).

Cheers,
Stan

Did not look at all, but greeting cards, reproduction on card stock and bookmarks have no significant market value.

Famous rain on bridge print by Hiroshige is reproduction of recut of late version. If miniature and/or on greeting card, no particular value.

If any prints are full size oban (around 55 cm x 40 cm) on thin paper with inscriptions, post picture each one and give sizes for identification then can search internet for title see recent sales or vendor sites for buying-price idea. If you sell to dealer would expect half that if item in excellent condition (original or early edition, minor fading, margins intact).

Good luck,
Cal
