Subject:rose medallion vase?
Posted By: tracey Fri, Mar 18, 2011 IP: 96.237.68.40

Hi, I believe this is a rose medallion vase, however, the ones I've seen (19th century) don't have any markings. Mine has a marking (pic included) Does this mean this is more modern vase? Stands approx 4"H. Thank you!

Your vase is vaguely influenced by style of decoration called 'Rose Canton' in the West, but not direct imitation.

Mark is apocryphal one for Qianlong reign of Qing Dynasty (1736-1795). It is transfer-printed, not hand drawn. And it reads left to right instead of right-left, so definitely made last half 20th century and probably within past 20 years. Mark was not meant to deceive, just meant to indicate quality, like "new-improved" on soap box.

Good luck,
Cal
