Subject:Antique Spinach Green Jade Horse Carving
Posted By: KP Mon, Mar 21, 2011 IP: 72.194.72.13

I have had this antique horse, carved from spinach green jade stone for quite some time. Thought about selling it if it is possibly worth a decent amount of cash.

Anyone have any more details about this and how much it would likely be worth?

Antique in the West means more than 100 years old. What I can see from your photos, this horse is up to app 20 years old and is made from Serpentine, which is softer than Jade..You can test it by taking a strong needle, and making a 2-3 mm scratch, using just enough pressure to make a mark, then tell me if it is black or white.

When I scratch the surface, it is white... I am pretty sure this is jade- it came from a large jade collection and is very cold to the touch.

Your hardstone carving is in genre of those of pseudo-ancient form made in the past 10-years or so, and is not especially beautifully finished, would not have appreciated in 'value' since new.

Enjoy as decoration.

Good luck,
Cal

Sorry, a white scratch means that it is Serpentine, which is softer than Jade.Cold to the touch means it is usually a stone, not necessarily Jade.

Hard to be from 10 years ago when it was picked up almost 30 years ago.

You may be mistaken here... how is this not jade? Any way to tell, other than some guessing from pictures?

The color shows that it is a low grade Nephrite or Serpentine. The white scratch is the proof that it is not Nephrite.Tough but true. The style is not old,and I have to agree with Cal that it fits the style of this Century.
