Subject:Landscape scroll bought in China about 25 years ago
Posted By: Tom Mon, Mar 21, 2011 IP: 87.211.169.159

In 1989 I have bought this Chinese scroll in Chengdu, China. I would like to know (roughly) what is written on the scroll and who the maker is.

Thanks,

Tom

this is a contemporary concoction attempting to look like an old classical landscape. the title is travelers in a mountain pass (the big characters) and the inscription on the work itself is signed "zhao mengfu", a major Yuan period painter, calligrapher, and official. if you google his work you'll immediately see that this is entirely unrelated to his own landscapes or writing.

the inscriptions mounted on the sides of the painting are purportedly enthusiastic assessments of the work by later connoisseurs, again in this case all manufactured. the seals bad imitations of imperial seals, the painting quality low.

Thanks again Rat for the reply. I like the piece because of the style. (which now I know is a copie of a grand master of the Yuan period). Next I will put some photo's of a tusk I've bought with old inscriptions at the bottom, you might want to take a look because you know a lot about Chinese art.

Tom
