Can someone please tell me what this vase is and what it says on the bottom of the vase.

Thanks, Wayne A.

The vase appears to be Japanese, but the image of the mark lacks sufficient resolution to be read clearly. Hopefully you have a zoom that will bring it close enough for proper perusal.

Thanks,

Bill H.

Hi Wayne & Bill,
The mark on the vase reads,Seiji Gaisha kore tsukuru, which can be translated as "made by Seiji Gaisha", with a signature below, Sochiku. Seiji Gaisha (1879-1897) was owned and operated by the original members who started Koransha with Fukagawa Eizaemon, and later separated from Fukagawa and started their own company, with innovative modern factory methods from Europe but ended shortly. A signature, Sochiku is the pseudonym used by Takeji Fukaumi(1849-1898).
This very decorative bottle vase shows a traditional Japanese skill and a modern design, an excellent example of Seiji Gaisha. You are lucky to own this vase.
Emiko

Hi Emiko,

Good to have you back.

Thanks very much for this information, which is my first encounter with this form of Seiji Gaisha mark, much less a signature used by Takeji Fukaumi. I'd call this vase handsome and rare.

Best regards,

Bill H.

A big thanks to both Emiko and Bill for helping me to identify this vase. This vase was from my 97 year old aunts estate. I agreed to help my family sell some of her valuable belongings and I have sold several pieces of English and French China pieces, and several sterling silver pieces on Ebay, and I don't quite well in doing so. Now I need to sell this vase. What would you guys think would be a value on this vase and what do you think would be the best option for me to sell it.

Thanks again to both of you, Wayne A.
