Subject:Japanese Hizen procelain, but what and how old?
Posted By: Sandra Sat, Apr 02, 2011 IP: 87.212.81.90

I would like know more about the style, origin and age of this Japanese porcelain plate.

It was brought back to Holland from Japan in the 1950s by the parents of a friend of mine who lived there for a few years.

The characters on the back on the right read "Hizen Arita". I did some research. Hizen was a province in Japan which seized to exist in 1865.
Japanese porcelain is what is known as Hizen porcelain, produced in the Hizen region (modern day Saga and Nagasaki Prefectures) before the early Edo period (1608-1868).

I can't figure out what the characters on the left are, possible the name of the maker.

I would appreciate any relevant information.

Thanks,
Sandra

Hi Sandra,

The whole mark reads "Hizen Arita yaki" and on the left "Taizan Saku" Taizan is probably a shop- or studioname. I guess it's a post 1900 piece. These marks also occured as stamped marks.

Arjan

Hi Arjan,
It's Teizan not Taizan.
Just for a quick answer.
I was away for two weeks and tried to catch up here in California.

Thank you both for the reply. I actually found a Teizan kiln 貞山窯 in Saga province.
