This is an Interesting Chinese Blanc De Chine White Porcelain Two Piece Bowl. When just looked at under normal light the Bowl appears pure white with a finely detailed incised white Five Claw Dragon and Phoenix design to the outside, along with an attached porcelain base rim with lotus decoration. But once some light is put behind it, or it is held up so sunlight the Bowl has an Interesting and Amazing hidden inner design. The design includes a Blue Five Claw Dragon and Phoenix Chasing a Pearl with Red Flame designs, and also a Large 2 Character mark. The Carved Wood Base is a nice Antique example and fits the Bowl perfectly for display. I bought it online at a pretty high price, but still can not tell anything about its age, and production background. I will really appreciate that experts could comment.
The image size is big, so I use the image link.

Pretty sure this piece dates to the 1980's.

There was a surge of production around the end of the Mao period of just this sort of item.

You also see vases with a similar design!

Gary.

You may know that not all white porcelain is 'blanc de Chine,' or Dehua porcelain.

I would be suspicious about nature of this novelty item at first glance due to added orange coloring on base. It is not rubbed off from stand. Dehua porcelain never fired orange, it was made using ingredients very free of iron impurities.

Such added orange color added to many new ceramics from China for impression to viewer that it is old.

Are a few good books Dehua porcelain, most known in English is by W. B. Honey (hard to find but maybe in large or university library).

Good luck,
Cal

I remember the auction when this bowl was sold and wondered why anyone would pay that much for this. There is no way to be gentle about it. Your bowl is very modern. No such bowl ever existed in China's history. They were all the rage in the 1980 and can be found in every China friendship store and other curio store made for the tourist trade. The seller of the bowl also never indicated it was old...

Help yourself especially your wallet if you want to collect. Get some books, read, be patient and the world of antique collecting will slowly open up to you. If you simply rush in, you will regret it immensely.

I did see some porcelains with "neifu" marks, and they date to 17-18 C; but I never met this kind. It could be older than modern pieces if the auctioneer told the truth. Anyway, I do appreciate your words; otherwise, I will be bankrupt with a pile of antique-like modern products.

I got more information about this bowl. This bowl was the collection of a noted Asian art collector who used to be the director of a famous museum in North America; he died in 1981 in his age of 70s.
Sorry for the delayed information.

Person died 1981 could purchase item 1980 for some practical use. Noted collector can be given modern trinket by ignorant acquaintance. Item can be sold from famous collection because was mistake by owner. Museum can sell item discovered not authentic (damaged, rebuilt, married, or reproduction). So 'provenience' often mean nothing.

Good luck,
Cal
