Subject:Antique scroll - need help with identification and value
Posted By: John Mezzapesa Wed, Apr 13, 2011 IP: 66.169.238.238

I recently found a few antique looking scrolls with Asian markings in a lien sale. I am not sure of the origin, time period, or value of these pieces. Any information would be helpful. There is a link to the albums with all the photos included I can provide more photos if needed. I will make a new post for each item. Thanks

I guess the link didn't work. Here are the photos I mentioned in my post. The first 6 are of the same scroll that measures about 58.5"x23.5". The next 3 photos are of two rubbings on very thin paper they measure 21"x22.5" and 19.5"x18.5" Finally the last 3 photos are of another smaller scroll that measures about 27.5"14.5".

Second group woodblock prints sold to tourists in Thailand and/or Indonesia.

First and third also printed, possibly copperplate engravings. Could be sold China, but made ??

All mid to late 20th century.

Good luck,
Cal

Cal,

I agree with you about the Thai rubbing. However, I suggest that the other two are actually rubbings from Chinese stone steles. It would be extraordinarily expensive to make copper plates of that size, and one would still find it difficult to achieve the texture of the print.

While these rubbings are becoming rarer as the Chinese government do not encourage the making of rubbings from the stones, they were popular - particularly before the post Cultural Revolution re-emergence of Chinese art and history conservation. The appearance of the scrolls makes me think that these are early 20th C rubbings.

Copperplate and other modern printing bases can be made photographically (have made huge printing plates myself).

Are sheet-feed printing presses print newspapers in large format, are continuous-feed presses from roll can cut any length. Consider also how modern cloth printed bolt length, can be near 2 meters wide.

Am influenced in opinion by different colors in first and third group photos. Charcoal not fade to brown. Is ink difference, poor printing.

Good luck,
Cal
