Hello,
I've bought some pieces of old jade that have what looks like dirt or some other mud dried to it. It's been cleaned off in places but a lot still remains. I'd like to clean them off. Is this advisable? And if so, how would I proceed? The person I bought them from thought I should leave them as is, but I think they'd look so much nicer cleaned up. What do I know?

If it is Jade, it is stone, Clean it by soaking it in sudsy water for quite a while, use more soap or detergent, a toothbrush,( it does not have to be your own) and that should do the trick.
Next step is taking pictures from different angles, and putting those in this forum to verify that it is indeed Jade.

You should post pictures. I suspect the "dirt" is artificial aging and the objects are new. Thus, cleaning them will not enhance the result.

You are right. If I see dirt on Jade, I worry. Steam cleaner should be great on stone, but not inside of living quarters...
