Hi, can anyone confirm if this is indeed an asian plate? On the back it engraved HP39?

No, probably USA stoneware, factory dinnerware probably 1960s. Stamped (not engraved) HP and number is pattern number.

Good luck,
Cal

Hello Mazzy,

YES, NO...
I think your plate is European but wait...... don't trow it away now.
I am pretty sure your faience plate was made in Hungaria or (nowdays) Slowakia and the mark stands for "Holitsch" If I'm right, it probably dates from the second half of the 18th. century and can be worth more than -lets say- 5 nice Chinese exportplates from the same period.
This is totally not my erea so I hope that others will confirm this.

Regards,

Arjan

I will try to do some research to find out more info on Holitsch. I hope you are right Arjan..lol. Hopefully someone else can confirm as well. Thank you both for your response!

Arjan, I think you may be right. I did some research and found two that are of similar pattern, different pieces with HP mark confirming them as Holitsch. I bought three plates the other day. I will also submit to maybe an auction house see if they agree. Just wanted to let you know I probably would have thrown them out had I not got your response. Thanks again!

Even if Holitsch made, is middle 20th century imitation of early/mid -19th century "yellow ground" Staffordshire "Gaudy Dutch" wares (made for export to USA) which were inspired by 18th century English porcelain imitations of Imari porcelains.

So has a certain history but not antique itself.

Good luck,
Cal

Hello Cal,

As I wrote, this is not my erea so I cant rule out that its a kind of fake.
From what I know/ found out is that such combined HP marks were used by the Holitsch (or Holic) factory which was operationable from 1743 till 1827. I think that the shape with the moulded rim, the (flower) decoration and the colors are all typical for Holitsch. They also made ware with a yellow ground in the 18th. century. Lets see if Mazzy can find some more information.

Regards,

Arjan

As mentioned in my last reply, I submitted photos to a reputable auction house asking if they were Holitsch plates, and they responded today saying the plates were "French tin glazed earthenware, 19th century", respectively. I replied back with question on what the HP mark would stand for on these French plates (haven't heard back). I'm curious now since the HP mark is a known Holitsch mark, as Arjan had mentioned, and research would indicate. The plates are so similar to Holitsch too. Thank you all for your feedback. I truly appreciate it!
