Subject:Antique Tibetan Tanka

I would appreciate any insight of this antique tanka, which a friend gave me. I think it is more than 100 years old. The painting is 17x26. What does it present? Is it valuable? I have uploaded a gallery of photos in the below web address. Thank you!

If you do internet search for "Four Lands" and "Pure Land" you can find some extensive commentaries referring to what is represented on your Thangka.

Thangkas are meant as aids to meditation, and genuine ones represent multiple layers of meaning.

For dating you would want to consult a textile expert concerning the nature of the underlying fabric (and any dyes). The character and chemical nature of the paint would also need to be analyzed. These factors can not be analyzed by photograph. Begin with nearest major museum which has curatorial staff in textiles and painting.

Good luck,
Cal
