Subject:Asian or South American carving?
Posted By: Patrick Norton Fri, May 13, 2011 IP: 99.110.126.120 Not sure where this stone carving is from or the type of stone. Under the stain the stone is green white with sparkles? Came from NYC and obviously not from there. |

Posted By: Ernest Wilhelm Fri, May 13, 2011 Looking at the back, it appears to be a softer stone than Quartz. |

Posted By: Patrick Norton Fri, May 13, 2011 Thank you Ernest; Now I can clean the baconwrap stain off this carving. Kind of heavy for quartz, it has the weight of lead. Now that Ernest confirmed new carving, I can get all this nasty stuff running down his face and body off. |

Posted By: Patrick Norton Fri, May 13, 2011 Cleaned the stone a little; no green left, went to a grey with white; still got the sparkle. Still need to clean again; does it still look like a quartz? |

Posted By: Patrick Norton Sat, May 14, 2011 The back of the stone is grey after cleaning and it has bands of sparkles quartz or white stone running through. The whole stone has that glitter look. Sparkles. Nice heavy desk paperweight. Ernest, can you ID the stone? |

Posted By: Patrick Norton Sat, May 14, 2011 Just went through 100's of pages of Hongshan Culture mythical figures, then mayan, aztec, inca, mexican, olmec and found nothing that looks like this one. Better photo of sparkles? They are throughout the stone. |

Posted By: Roger Sun, May 15, 2011 It looks like it may be granite which is about the same color as your piece and usually contains quartz and feldspar. Granite is used by native Americans and by the Indians of Mexico and South America for grinding stones and bowls. They often take on the appearance of your statue. Crystals are very evident in polished granite headstones. |

Posted By: Patrick Norton Sun, May 15, 2011 Thinking Indians of Mexico and South America is right; the reason I thought Hongshan was because it had that baconwrap, stuffed into a dead animal and buried look. Granite or marble. |
