Subject:Yixing Teapot
Posted By: Bilal Wed, May 18, 2011 IP: 182.177.230.78

Hi Gary,
Since your last comment on the teapot, I have acquired this piece. It is delicate and very nice to hold. It is hand-crafted, the size is 10.50 cm x 7.5 cm x 5 cm and very light in weight.
Please let me have any additional opinion/comments and also what's inscribed on the lid-knob?

I am posting a few more pictures on photobucket giving some additional details.

Regards,
Bilal

First, I don't think it is XiYing. It is quite roughly finished.

Second, the character on the top is Shou - meaning long life.

The pattern on the side is based on the 100 ways of writing the character Shou. But there are only 49 on the side we can see. Are there another 49 on the other side, and are they the same as these or different? Even if there was another 49 characters on the other side, plus the one on the lid, that would only make 99. So it would be incomplete.

Third, why didn't you show the base. That should usually contain the mark of the maker, or maker's Hall. Additionally, I would look for another mark on the inside of the lid.

Whatever, this looks very much like something made for the tourist trade, not a piece of serious tea ceremony ware.

Hihe Mikeoz,

Thanks for your comments.

For your reference, I am attaching pictures that were already posted here on May 04 under "Teapot", and had been commented upon by Gary. These pictures contain a view of other side and also the seal (or a name) which appears at the bottom.

Is possible that the artist intended "Shou" on the lid to be the 'first' which might be read with other 49 "Shou" on either side thus making a total of 50?

I'll appreciate any further opinion/comments so that I may have a better understanding about such artifacts.

Please have a look:

Regards,
Bilal

Hello again Bilal.

I agree with most everything mikeoz says I'm afraid.

It's another modern one!

Better luck next time.

Gary.
