Subject:Jade question

Got a third jade incense burner this week. Is this stone or glass? Heavier then both my green ones and much thicker; very shallow bowl. Was cheeper then glass so I bought it. Has some surface dings on the rings.

Calcite comes to mind, which is easy to scratch. Some Close-up pictures may be helpful.

It seems to be a stone, perhaps Serpentine.Did you do the scratch test?

The item (rock?) is heavy compaired to the serpentine stones I have. It will scratch, tested inside lid. More brittle then soft like serpentine, that was why I was thinking molded glass. Can not find any air bubbles, has some surface dings on rings. Has good size, but lacking a stand. Never seen a white serpentine stone?

Ah yes, that's why I mentioned Calcite. Specific gravity test can definitely answer your question.

Thanks Ernest; it does have a bluish color to the white when photographed. Calcite sounds right; to soft to be marble. Has good weight to the stone and tried a little petroleum jelly to the nicks on the rings, they vanished. Seems to be soluble with petroleum acids. Thanks again Ernest, nice to have a geologist helping ID all these carved rocks.

Patrick..NO, I am not a Geologist, but I do have all sorts of stone carvings in my collection which help to identify many other carvings. I also have some tools to check stones.
