Subject:Xuande Mark on Bronze Vase?
Posted By: June Michel Tue, May 31, 2011 IP: 76.186.175.131

Hi,
I am trying to identify this mark on a bronze vase that has been in my family for many many years. I have just started doing research and would love any help as to when this was made/period and what this mark means. The vase is 9" tall.
Thanks in advanced for any help :)

actually no, thank goodness, this is not a xuande mark but something entirely different. i don't know much about recent bronzes but this strikes me as japanese rather than chinese, 19th century? am sure you will get more knowledgable comments.

Yes, just discovered a faint "Japan" mark on the bottom. Thanks for your response. :) Would really love to know more about this piece.

The mark contains a seal-writing character or characters between a pair of stylized dragons. I can't read the mark, though the vase appears to be a Japanese product with champleve enamel decoration that was popular toward the end of the Meiji era, or circa the late 19th-early 20th C.

Good luck,

Bill H.
