Posted By: Patrick Norton Wed, Jun 22, 2011 Real nice box. Looks to be late 19th century from photos but impossible to value from photos due to the inlaid nacre. Many new copies of antiques that use plastic mother of pearl. The knapp joints and hardware seem to place it into mid 1800's but it is the inlaid nacre that creates value. Just like tortoiseshell tea caddy's most are plastic faux copies made for okimono. Think that means eBay in Japanese? |

Posted By: Carolyn Thu, Jun 23, 2011 Thanks for the info, I believe it was obtained around 1950's. I've been told that it is either Huanghuali or Hongmu timber and that it's probably chinese. Am looking to the sell the piece but hard to get a realistic valuation as they've ranged dramatically in price scale. |

Posted By: Roger Wed, Dec 28, 2011 Pretty piece. Under 100 years old. Wood seems to be huali (not huang hua li). Southern China or below. Reminds me of a "made for export" item... Looks like it MAY have been repaired once in the past. |
