Subject:Rose Medallion Bowl Dating
Posted By: Marie Mon, Jun 27, 2011 IP: 186.9.3.11 I would be grateful for your opinion on the approximate date of manufacture of this Rose Medallion bowl as well as any other information you may have. It measures 8" diameter. |

Posted By: Bill H Wed, Jun 29, 2011 This isn't a pattern I collect, but I believe it dates to late in the fourth quarter of the 19th century. The painting is pretty good, but the enamels lack the brilliance of those on earlier export wares, and the gilt is less bright too. These issues probably reflect shortages of quality pigments and other materials due to late Qing economic woes. |

Posted By: Bill H Thu, Jun 30, 2011 Just a postscript: I'd forgotten I had this piece, a 10.75-inch Canton famille rose platter with a pattern akin to your bowl but without medallion. This one probably dates to circa 1875 or somewhat later and itself seems to have slightly less brilliant enamels, particularly the greens, than some other dishes with similar decoration. |

Posted By: Marie Fri, Jul 01, 2011 Thank you Bill for posting that photo, it is very illustrative. Another question, while my bowl has a center ring or medallion the decorated area is not divided in compartments nor has human figures. What would be the precise name for it, Rose Medallion, Rose Canton, or Famille Rose? |
