Subject:Little Old Blue Plate
Posted By: Ron Sat, Jul 09, 2011 IP: 98.176.202.196 I have a couple of questions. This little blue plate is 7 inches diameter and 1.5 inches tall. The rim quickly turns up. What would this have been used for? Also, is this an imitation of an earlier style like Jun? It seems like an old plate but I don't know how old. I'm assuming they've been making imitations of earlier wares for centuries. |

Posted By: PyroManiac Sun, Jul 10, 2011 Actually it does look like a Jun dish! Jun items are notoriously difficult to authenticate with just images. It's one of those things that you need to handle yourself. Such low dishes are a known shape for Song - Yuan pieces. The base does not have any immediate red flag warnings based on the provided images. However your images are really not of the best quality. Tap the dish. Real Jun dishes and bowls give off a flat sound when tapped. If it rings like a porcelain piece, then it's not. |

Posted By: Ron Mon, Jul 11, 2011 Well, that's nice to know. So far, I've only gotten one piece that I've been disappointed in. I try to keep my purchases somewhere in the vicinity of $100, so I don't really expect to get a truly old piece. I just buy what I like (as long as it LOOKS old). I've been getting basically all of my Chinese ceramics off eBay. So, I'm not deluding myself. |

Posted By: Ron Mon, Jul 11, 2011 Forgive my images. My digital camera is over ten years old and I dropped it once. I made these images in the laundry room with a flash. I forgot to mention, the glaze is very patchy on both sides. Some areas are dull and some areas are shiney. If this is a reproduction, it isn't a modern one. I wasn't even sure that this was Jun style or not. I thought it might be. |
