Subject:Laquer Tray; figures on boats
Posted By: Robert S. Mon, Jul 11, 2011 IP: 71.90.232.38

This laquer tray is about 20" x 15" and has great detail from the fittings of the boats, to the farmers in the background. The large ship has a name on the back, I'll post a close-up of it. No marks on the reverse, just black laquer. Unfortunately, a previous owner was careless by lightly spraying the surface with paint. I'd like any feedback: where is it from? age? rarity? white paint removal? Thank you.

The view purports to be toward Mt. Fuji, Japan (the dark mountain with crooked light colored line partly around it), but is probably a composite of several prints.

The large ship with the two laterally off-center masts is mainly of the 16th-century European 'carrack' type, but some elements have been changed/added: the rows of persons on deck would actually have been rowers belowdecks. Do internet searches for "Spanish Armada" and "galley ship" and you will get some interesting images.

I'd bet on its being a product from last half of 20th century, with decorative interest and an occasion for a little historical research.

Good luck,
Cal

Japonisme. Not Japanese. Totally European fantasy.
