Subject:Daoguang-era meat plate
Posted By: Matt Fri, Jul 29, 2011 IP: 66.169.192.68

Attached are photos of a very large (54cm x 27cm) platter made for the Western market with a complex pictorial representation of what I am guessing is Cao Cao's naval build-up before the Battle of Red Cliff (or Chibi) as told in "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms."

Would anyone be willing to translate the inscriptions on the two banners, or the poem at the top of the dish? These characters probably hold the "secret" to the narrative being told.

It's a very interesting piece of Chinese export ware.

Hi Matt,

A nice piece you have. A pitty nobody could translate the characters (till now). Maybe my post triggers f.i. Bill H. to help.

Regards,

Arjan

Thanks! I appreciate your interest. It's puzzled me for years, and now I'm really pushing to learn.
Best
Matt
