Subject:Large Group Asian Ceramics

I have ben posting from time to time on the Forum and I respect and value your comments. I just went to an estate sale today. The estate belonged to a woman who taught in Vietnam. Her brother was an antique dealer out east. He died in the 70s. It's impossible to know where she got all these pieces. If you can help me a little with dating, periods, style I would be very appreciative. I have happened onto some very nice asian art and I love collecting but I don't know much about Chinese ceramics.

I am going to upload images to my Flickr, there are quite a few pieces, probably 25-30 pieces in all. The people that handled the estate knew NOTHING about Asian art.

Thanks, Dan E.

Hi Dan,

I allready answered your PM but in short:
I think about all pieces are 19th. /20th. century. Some pieces (specialy the ones with blindmarks) are Japanese and probably transferprinted) A lot (gold/cupper rims mostly with 2 marks) are "bleu the hue" pieces which is Chinese porcelain made for the Vietnamese market. I think most of that is 19th. century.(one looks printed and could be Japanese 20th. ct. as well)

Regards,

Arjan

The first one looks like it was made specifically for export to Vietnam.
The third looks like a typical Chinese item, not specifically for Vietnam.

Never seen something like the second one.

Of the images shown here, the B&W bowl at the top with phoenix decoration and a metal rim mount has a stylistic similarity to other 19th century bleu de hue ware I've seen.

The first group online at flickr (images 2178-2184) appears to show a Japanese transfer-decorated 'flow blue' plate or platter that probably dates to cira 1900-1925. Its impressed mark looks to be written in phonetic characters, which I can't read.

I've only had time to scan the other flickr pix thus far and note that some have the 'Noi Phu' (Inner Palace) mark associated with Chinese wares commissioned for use by the Vietnamese court. I've included an image of the characters below.

I'll add other comments as time permits, but should note that this month is quite busy for me.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks for the excellent information. I was able to find out allot about these from what you 3 gave me. I really enjoy this group, seeing these beautiful antiques and learning about the history of so many fine art pieces is wonderful.

Thanks Again!!!

Dan E.
