Subject:can anyone give me details on my jade carving
Posted By: sheila Fri, Aug 12, 2011 IP: 94.3.21.237 Hi I have a jade carving that I bought a few months ago. When I first bought it it was covered in hard wearing paint. I have since taken the paint of to discover that underneath it is jade. I have since email a jade specialist who has advised me that it might be ancient nephrite and that the carving looks like a chinese medicine meaning. The thing that baffles me is why would you paint such a beautiful stone???? It has about 6 holes in the carving and some have been blocked up, after doing some research I was wondering if it might be a tomb piece and that it was painted to hide the fact. I have enclosed a before and after photo for you to look at. Can anyone advise me any further on the age, and what the carving means have you seen anything like this before.

Posted By: Ernest Wilhelm Sun, Aug 14, 2011 I see a dragon horse, a phoenix,bamboo, a fungus and a bat, all highlighted with paint.Unless I see better pictures, this looks very much like a modern carving.

Posted By: Ernest Wilhelm Tue, Aug 16, 2011 Still, something does not look right. Please make a scratch test, use a strong needle, and make a 2-3 mm scratch on sound stone. Use enough pressure to see a small black or white line, then let us know.

Posted By: Randy Li Mon, Sep 26, 2011 It seems to be a Burmese jadeite hat ornament. It may be from the early 1900's. The reason for the paint might be to hide the value of this item so that it won't be confiscated by the communist government.
