Subject:12 Qi Baishi prints
Posted By: Mac Banucost Thu, Aug 18, 2011 IP: 98.194.32.20

I have a map with 12 beautiful Qi Baishi prints.

I appreciate your comments and any help regarding the translation into English.

Does anyone have any idea regarding the portfolio's value?

Thank you!

These look like a series of prints made by Beijing's Rongbaozhai, an antique store/publisher/art supply store. they come up occasionally on ebay and in chinese auctions but I don't remember what they sell for, I think around a thousand dollars for a good set, but the standard deviation can be rather large if I recall correctly. why do you say yours are on a map? the inscriptions simply say "Baishi" or other variants on the artist's name.

Photomechanical reproduction of original paintings can be done on 20th century printing presses in the thousands in very little time. They could be sold under license by the artist, or in museum shops for (say) USD $5 to $12 each (they cost much less than a US dollar each to produce) unframed.

They do not have the sort of 'value' that the original artworks had and have, but persons wanting to have prints framed and use to decorate may consider that some preferred ones have some use-value. What that might be would be in the eye of the beholder.

Consider the scam known as "limited edition." A well advertised vendor of porcelain "collector" plates did not tell you that they produced ~only~ 10,000 of a given item at a time.

Good luck,
Cal

Thank you very much for your response.

While duplicating is relatively easy nowadays, I do believe that the prints are authentic woodblock prints on rice paper. As the label on the folder suggests, the publisher/seller is Rong Bao Zhai (http://www.rongbaozhai.cn/en/ProductJingy.aspx?CateId=93)

Even if are woodblock prints (not likely) are reproductions of original paintings.

Look at with magnifier at least 10x power, what do you see? If see grids of dots, are photomechanical prints made like magazines printed.

If are woodblock prints will see slight registration errors where completely different colors overlap, and especially on backs will see slight raised areas marking edges of blocks since there must be a little pressure to transfer ink.

Good luck,
Cal

a number of these prints are not of Qi Baishi paintings at all. a couple look to be of Zhang Daqian images, one of Wu Sheng's etc. they all appear in the album whose cover you show in one of the photographs?

Thank you very much for your responses.

I mistakenly posted a couple of pics upside down.

You are correct with your observation: though the map that contains the prints mentions only Qi Baishi, not all the prints inside belong to him...
