Subject:Decorated Chinese Side Chair. European or Chinese
Posted By: Dan E. Thu, Aug 25, 2011 IP: 71.89.116.16

A set of side chairs came from the teachers estate where I recently acquired so many other Asian items. She had some very nice things.

Can anyone please tell me if these are European or Chinese? They look more European to me.

I am certain that they are very old, Early to mid 19th century, possibly older. I would love to here your thoughts and I thought you may enjoy seeing them.

Thanks, Dan E.

The lathe-turned legs and figural painting on your chair strongly indicate to me that it was made in Europe and decorated with a chinoiserie motif.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Probably USA made. Is standard 'Hitchcock chair' style, decorated either as Chinoiserie or Japonism. While could have been made as early as middle 19th century, many reproductions (more or less) of antique items were made in 1930s to 1950s. Do internet search for 'Wallace Nutting' for examples.

Hitchcock chairs were painted in many styles. Have not myself seen one with this style, but then the chair itself could have been made decades before repainted.

Would take American furniture expert hands-on view of construction to tell for sure when made.

Good luck,
Cal
