Subject:Bookends, Nephrite or Jadeite(?) or Neither
Posted By: zane Fri, Sep 23, 2011 IP: 76.22.82.146

Found a couple bookends that looked interesting and old. Is anyone familiar with this subject? Look to be fish with human legs and feet. Also, might these be carved out of some type of jade? Any information would be greatly welcomed. Thank you.

Sorry, for some reasons certain pics are not being picked up. So here goes again.

Even without picture, can say huge numbers carved bookends made of soft stone, mostly alabaster, for gift, tourist and export from 1920s through 20th century. Can be easily dyed/colored in part. Are birds, horses, elephants, etc. Alabaster scratch very easy with needle, and if you put drop vinegar on bottom it will fizz.

Good luck,
Cal

Cal, you are a clairvoyant, outside of knowing your business!!
Those 2 pieces are Serpentine, dipped in dye-stuff.
