Subject:Tea set

Hi we were given a full teaset a think its japanese its turquoise with white dragons on it with 3D geisha girls on the bottom. on the base are |H HP.I know my father bought them in Singapore in about 1952..Just wondered if anyone had any info on them

Hi Tom,

Your set is Japanese indeed and was probably (about)new when bought in 1952. Although a bit different I saw the mark HHP before on a teaset black/gold) which was dated as post WWII. While the coffee pot of that set had the HHP mark other parts were marked as Kutani so that must be the origin.

Yes, it is a 1950s mass-produced tea set.

The molded-in 'geishas' are a cheaper substitution for a more subtle technique used some 30-60 years earlier, search these boards and the internet for the word 'lithopane'.
