Subject:identify Ch'ing Dynasty characters on figural Chinese porcelain teapot
Posted By: David Thu, Oct 06, 2011 IP: 99.255.148.231

Hello all, I have in my possession a figural Chinese porcelain pheasant or rooster? teapot with blue underglaze "Yung Cheng" characters, in a double circle, on the bottom. I would very much like to have this mark critiqued. Any assistance with this query would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time in this matter! David. P.S. Additional photos can be arranged!

Transfer printed mark is decorative only.

Mark is nearly always least important factor in evaluation of Chinese and Japanese ceramics.

If you want opinions of when and where teapot made, show good photos.

Good luck,
Cal

The mark reads down in two columns from the upper right side in Mandarin pinyin as Da Qing Yong Zheng Nian Zhi' (Made during the Yongzheng Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty). It is apocryphal, having gaps and other irregularities suggesting it was applied by a type of transfer or decal that wasn't in use until the early 20th century in China. Without seeing more of the teapot that bears the mark, it is impossible to say anything else very substantive. However, I would offer conjecture that this is a late 20th century or subsequent decorative product.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanx allot Bill; we are always hoping for that "mona lisa!". P.S. I have uploaded an additional pic of the teapot itself. David.

Yep, that does appear to be a 'spring chicken' and not an old hen.
Cheers,

Hi David,

The mark looks printed to me so leads me to the 20th. century (or later).

Regards,

Arjan
