Hello,

I would really appreciate some help in deciphering the painter's name on this seal. I know the first character is jia...

Thanks much!

not a lot to add. as you note, the first character is the surname Jia, the second character is "shi", referring to "family, clan", the third and fourth character is a given name that is not obvious to me, the last two are "hua yin", or "seal for paintings". please post the picture itself

Thanks so much - I managed to find out that the fourth character is "niu", as in "cow". That leaves only the third character.

The painting does not belong to me, I'm afraid I cannot post it until I hear back from the owner.

wow, really? I wouldn't have guessed that. admittedly I have no better suggestion...the only thing that comes to mind for the 3rd character is "tai" the character for large "da" with a dot at the bottom, but a name like "tainiu" doesn't make much sense to me, unless you take niu as its slang meaning of "cool, awesome". but who would have a seal that read "Jia Supercool"?

mikeoz knows a lot about seal script, he may be able to figure this out if he sees it.

Hello

Thanks rat. I posted a reply but somehow it didn't show up.
I'm not 100% sure but it does seem like "niu" when I checked it against the character on Richard Sears' (I think) page.
Also I did not know "niu" is slang for cool. That's really...bizarre.

yes, I thought so too the first time I heard it, but that's how it's used these days, kind of like "cool, gutsy, daring"
