Subject:Old painting
Posted By: Patrick Norton Mon, Oct 31, 2011 IP: 99.184.60.229 Got this large old painting, any clue to origin and age? Hand made wood frame, base color seems to be a brown ochre form of dye. Someone put a lot of money into conservation glass and matting but kept original hand chiseled frame. Any clue to style, origin or art? |

Posted By: rat Tue, Nov 01, 2011 can't tell what the overall picture is from your photograph, but the detail shows that you have at least a picture of popular Daoist figure Shoulou (associated with longevity) with his usual peaches behind him. probably 100 years old plus or minus, folk artish rather than painterly. |

Posted By: Patrick Norton Fri, Nov 11, 2011 Thanks Rat, I agree about this painting being way old and someone went with newer high dollar conservative glass and matting; the frame looks hand chiseled. Only seen a couple base brown ochre color paintings in my lifetime. All the paint seems to be earth pigment. The scene is Star Trek related with vulcan spock pointed ear children carrying a tree for Shou Xin Gong. Big painting. Hoping for origin? |

Posted By: Patrick Norton Sun, Nov 20, 2011 Found a simular frame and hangers on eBat but the seller claims it is Japanese? The estate where I got the items was all pretty much Korean? The eBat item is on eBat; with item # 380386350329 |

Posted By: rat Mon, Nov 21, 2011 the frame and hangars are likely Chinese, there are tons of these out there, but Korean is a possibility as well. Korean scrolls are not very common, so hang onto it until you can find someone who knows Korean art well to assess. |
