Posted By: Ernest Wilhelm Sun, Nov 13, 2011 As I understand, about 300 carvings from the Hong Shan dynasty were found, but perhaps 3 million carvings are on the market. Yours is one of the latter. |

Posted By: danny law Tue, Nov 15, 2011 Hi Michael, thanks for your reply. You have a few collections of chinese jade. Does your jades had skeleton crystals in it. Also was there any signs of Secondary. Did you used a magify glass to check your collections? You never know one of your jades may be real stuff. |

Posted By: Michael Wed, Nov 16, 2011 Hi Danny, thanks for your comment. I do use a magnifying glass to look at my stuff but to be honest, I dont know what to look for. I dont think I will recognise a skeleton crystal even if it jumps out and bite at me :) It is ok with me if none of my collection is real. It is just a simple hobby for me.(Btw, check out this so-called Western Zhou jade bead.) |

Posted By: Michael Fri, Nov 18, 2011 Hi Ernest, are you referring to Xinjiang? If so, I dont think it is difficult for the Chinese government to control its export. The price of jade has already gone up through the roof over the last 10 years. That is why I keep my hobby simple and purchase only what I can afford:) For example, I bought this interesting bird for a few tens of dollars, both as a paper weight and to study it closely. As the saying goes: you get what you pay for! (The Chinese saying is more apt: one cent for one cent's worth.) |

Posted By: Ernest Wilhelm Wed, Nov 16, 2011 As far as I know, they found about 300, then made more than 3 million for the collectors who could not afford paying several hundred thousand dollars per carving.. |

Posted By: danny law Sun, Nov 20, 2011 Hi Ernest, do you know anybody can appraise archaic jade in Canada or USA. The jade that I had have secondary/ skeleton crystals/ alteration also I check the hole of the jade had a lots of qaurtz sand left inside and the hole were drilled from both side. When I left it alone for a week or so it was dull and after I handled it for a few day it became shinny and oily.Thank you for your advice. |

Posted By: Ernest Wilhelm Mon, Nov 21, 2011 Appraisals for Jade carvings are open, depending on the amount of research involved. Many times it isn't worth to get an appraisal. Preferably send pictures of the items, and then one can decide if an appraisal is feasible. |

Posted By: Ernest Wilhelm Sat, Nov 19, 2011 Michael.. what I would recommend is to check for specific gravity, and separate the Jade from the non-Jade pieces. |

Posted By: Ernest Wilhelm Sun, Nov 20, 2011 A balance scale will do the job. If you are in Singapore, you might find a good one, new, at app. $300.US, quite a bit less if used. |

Posted By: Ernest Wilhelm Sun, Nov 20, 2011 To test without proper equipment would be very complicated. It is easy if you buy a larger balance scale which is advertised as useful for SG testing. |
