Subject:Bronze mythical beasts
Posted By: dj johnson Tue, Dec 13, 2011 IP: 69.170.194.75 Can anyone help with origin or age? Belonged to my father for 40-50 yrs. 12" high, 14 lbs. male female genitals, with access to belly area. Thanks so much, Dale |

Posted By: Bill H Tue, Dec 13, 2011 It looks a bit like a Nepalese or Tibetan lion, possibly late 19th or early 20th century from its patina but difficult to say what use it might have served. I've seen similar ones with removable heads that functioned as censers, but they had no holes in the belly. |

Posted By: dj johnson Wed, Dec 14, 2011 Thank you Bill H., the belly openings are rectangular, one is open, the other still sealed. I certainly appreciate the input. Also, looking into the open one, it appears to have some crud, almost as if buried at one time. Thank you again, Dale |

Posted By: dj johnson Wed, Dec 14, 2011 Thanks so much for the help, Bill H. I have been starved for info on these even though I had them in my home as I grew up.My father acquired them as collateral on an unpaid debt and knew nothing of their story. Here are pics of the undersides. One has been opened, the other not.It almost appears they were buried at one time. Thanks, again for any opinions, Dale |
