Subject:looking for information on cabinet
Posted By: Ralph Sat, Jan 28, 2012 IP: 70.49.4.115 I bought this cabinet at auction ,, it has a provenance that states it came from the 1908 worlds fair and that is was made just for that fair, It was purchased there by a Canadian Minister of Parliament and had been in that family since. |

Posted By: Cal Sat, Jan 28, 2012 Looks like the story you were told was probably correct as to date made. It is typical early 20th-century rococo carving, not dissimilar from USA and some French carving of 3rd-4th quarter 20th century. |

Subject:Correction
Posted By: Cal Mon, Jan 30, 2012 Reference to USA/French carving should have said 3rd-4th quarter 19th century, not 20th century. |

Posted By: Cal Wed, Feb 01, 2012 Would be called display cabinet, is not a traditional Chinese style. Probably made for sale to Westerner as pseudo-Chinese item. Chinese factories at that time make lots of stuff for Western market in all media. Some, like your cabinet, meant more for decoration than for practical use - could hold but a few items, and no drawers or doored niches. Hinge(s) hold heavy circular door probably working loose from wood, such damage very hard to securely repair. |
