I was handed down 2 vases. I'm trying to find out what the marks and labels on the bottom say. I think it's Japenese. I took them to my local antique store but he didn't know much about them. He told me that they are old and may be worth alot of money. I would like to know the time period and the artist if possible.

Your vases are in a type of Japanese porcelain known as 'sharkskin', also called Coralene, because of its textured glaze. The marks are of the maker Takeuchi Chubei.

See the link below for further information on Takeuchi and his sharkskin porcelain. I believe such marks probably date to around 1885. There was a recent thread concerning this subject, but apparently it has yet to be indexed, and can't be retrieved, at least not by me.

Thank you Bill for the information and the links. They have been in my family for at least 80 years. After searching the internet for weeks it's nice to finally know more about them. Seeing other pieces of his work made my day!

It is Japanese. And these are modern production, not antique.
