Subject:Help identifying a mark on satsuma vase
Posted By: Michael Sat, Feb 04, 2012 IP: 68.202.181.145

I am contemplating purchasing a Satsuma vase that is signed on the bottom. I cannot find anything similar to this mark in everything I have looked through. Any help identifying it and possibly dating it would be much appreciated. The only picture I took was of the mark and I apologize in advance for not having one of the whole vase. Thank you for your help.

Hi Michael,

The upper, or better ...right character reads right. This means there was also a left one and your vase was/is one of a pair. The other markings were probably meant to fit proper pairs together. Those kind of "fitting" markings were used a lot on Satsuma like ware from Kyoto (1920/1930's ?)

Regards,

Arjan
