not much help I realize but yours is a Japanese vase, not Chinese.

Hi, thanks for the reply, i thought it might be chinese as the second character mark is a Nian Zhi mark. Are you sure its japanese?

URL Title :base mark

yes, definitely japanese. the mark is X (not sure off top of head), then the character for "6", and then "sei" (japanese for "zhi"), which means "made", so the first two characters are likely the maker's name. I am pretty ignorant about Japanese stuff though.

Hi Dave & Rat,

the characters look to me like P, which are pronounced "yu" and "liu" in Chinese. The latter is "six", while the former has various meanings, including "sedan chair", "chariot", "to contain", "the earth" and "the people", among others.

The two characters appear to form some Japanese names, but I defer to our Japanese speakers to find plausible transcriptions.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks again for your response and information.Maybe another person could fill in the blanks as i really would like to know what the base mark and artist signature say. In particular i would like to know the age of the vase. It is quite a large size too at 30 cm (12") high.
Thanks again Rat

read the signature on the base as 'Yoroku sei'.

Can't help you much further. I tried to read the decorator's signature but failed.
In any case, it is Japanese.

Guy.

How old do you think the vase might be? it does ooze quality and i was thinking the decoration might be that of Arita porcelain??
