Subject:Which of these boards to use?
Posted By: Steve Mon, Feb 20, 2012 IP: 50.32.35.97

I posted a query a little while back about an interesting small Chinese bronze figure over at the other forum, and it's gotten all but no replies after several hundred views. Several folks contacted me wanting to know if I wanted to sell it, but nobody would share their knowledge in the message thread.

The thread is linked below. Should I have posted that query in here?

This is not an appraisal service guaranteeing to have 'experts' on hand able to evaluate every type of item posted. Free of charge. Persons who view posts may or may not have any experience with X type of object.

If you want appraisal by expert, auction house with very well developed Asian Art Dept. is place to go in person with object. If want evaluation, particularly whether probably modern casting or not, large university or museum with large Asian Arts Dept. should be consulted in person with object. Items for consideration: casting and construction method, whether patina added by chemical treatment or mineral pigment, constituents of metal.

I will note that your view from top presents quite different picture of casting (poor fit and finishing) than does limited side view presented first post. This is one reason personal handling is often essential for evaluation.

Good luck,
Cal
