Subject:Martaban Jar identification
Posted By: Frank Lee Sun, Apr 01, 2012 IP: 175.137.125.51

Hi there.I've discovered a martaban jar during a pedestrian survey in a 16th century Johore Sultanate site in Kota Tinggi, Malaysia. There is a band of paddle-impressed geometric texture on the upper body of the jar and 2 string lines below it.The jar is partially glazed with brown (natural fly-ash?) glaze. Could anyone determine the date of this relic? Any Information would be appreciated.

Not all large storage jars are in class 'Martaban' which refers to glazed jars used in sea trade and the jars themselves traded as utility vessels.

Why you think jar you show not contemporary with site (if found undisturbed area) and not made locally?

Good luck,
Cal

I found many shards of 19 century Chinese export porcelain including footed bowl (shuangxi bowl)and stoneware on the surface of the site.
