Subject:Anyone know what this signature says?
Posted By: Peter Bagley Fri, Apr 20, 2012 IP: 86.27.19.218 Here's a signature for someone to interpret, if possible. it seems to be a satsuma signature, but not sure what the rest means. |

Posted By: Bill H Sun, Apr 22, 2012 This photograph indeed does lend itself to a great deal of interpretation. I would speculate the dim right-hand characters to read 'Great Japan' (Dai Nippon), while those on the left begin with two that possibly form the name 'Gyokushu'. The last character in that stack is more of a blur, though this is the usual spot for 'sei' or ''zo' (made by). The middle is more recognizable as 'Satsumayaki' (Satsuma ware), written under the typical circled cross. |

Posted By: Bill H Tue, Apr 24, 2012 Not a peep, in the literal sense. However, the mark looks less well written than I'd expect on wares made in the Meiji period (1868-1912), which encompassed most of Japan's 'golden age' of exports. |
