Subject:Another satsuma Signature?
Posted By: Peter Bagley Mon, Apr 23, 2012 IP: 86.31.205.205

I have this little bowl shaped reticulated, moriage (?)vase.

I think the signature is the same as on one of the other items I've queried, ie, Dai Nippon, signed by Gyokushu, but would just like confirmation.

I'd also like to know if this tells anything about the likely age of this vase.

Pictures of the vase and the signature are attached.

Thanks.

The 'Dai Nihon' terminology originally was not used later than World War II, but it is quite possible that recently made products have revived such marks to simulate making early in 20th century. Some makers in past 30 years have been faking mass-produced tea-set factory marks from earlier in the 20th century. There is no reason that other marks could not also be revived or simulated -- not by the originating factories -- for export.

Good luck,
Cal

That's interesting.

So how can I tell if it's genuine or not? Or is it just not possible without a professional appraisal?

Thanks.
