Hello All! Can anyone identify the characters on this cast metal Buddha statue? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! David.

In Chinese the characters read down as 'Da Fo Xiang' (Great Buddha Fragrance [or in this case Incense]). The three characters also end up as a homonym for 'Great Buddha Image'.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanx again Bill! Any idea as to age? The back of the statue (incense burner) reads: MADE IN JAPAN! David.

'Made in Japan' came into use circa 1920, I believe, but it is my impression that the use of Buddha images as incense holders, as opposed to burning incense before them in separate containers, is a fairly modern practice (hopefully someone will correct me if this perception is incorrect). Otherwise small votive images of the Buddha have long been sold to devotees for use on home altars and as amuets by shops in the vicinity of principal Buddhist shrines wherever the religion is practiced.

Best regards,

Bill H.
