Hi David,

The mark is a variation of the Fuku ("Good fortune" or "happiness") mark. Commonly used on Kutani porcelain.

Regards,

Arjan

mark is photographed upside down but reads "fuku" in Japanese ("prosperity")

This is the mark "Fuku" (Happiness in Japanese). The mark is of Chinese origin, but is now widely used on contemporary Japanese porcelain as decoration, it seems.
